Activity Update: 9-30-17

It’s been quite the busy week as far as activity goes. New volcanoes have woken up and are causing quite the ruckus.  There are 48+ volcanoes at watch or warning status, and many others that are showing some unrest.

The big show stealers this week have been Popocatepetl in Mexico, Agung in Bali, and Ambae in Vanuatu.

El Popo’s eruptions started just weeks before a series of massive earthquakes rocked Mexico. Locals are understandably nervous about its continued, and increasing activity.

Agung and Ambae have been kicking up all manner of ash and lava bombs, in conjunction with some pretty wild seismic readings. Agung was actually pulsating on Friday. Authorities have evacuated the entire island of Ambae, and residents in Bali within 12 km of the volcano have been evacuated. Thankfully these volcanoes have been showing unrest, and that the government officials have heeded the mountain’s warnings and are trying to keep their people safe. Unfortunately, there are always people who refuse to leave in situations like this, and when the volcanoes do send up their big eruption, the impact on these countries will not be insignificant.

What about the rest of the planet? Here’s what’s hopping, separated by region:
